The Indianapolis Colts made a huge deal Monday, trading the No. 13 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft in exchange for San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
The Colts are now without a first-round pick for the second year in a row (they traded out in 2019). This won’t stop general manager Chris Ballard from trading back in if he wants to, but now the Colts will be waiting on Day 1 barring a change.
Here’s a look at the updated draft order for the Colts after the huge trade:
- Round 2 | No. 34 overall (from WAS)
- Round 2 | No. 44 overall
- Round 3 | No. 75 overall
- Round 4 | No. 122 overall
- Round 5 | No. 160 overall
- Round 6 | No. 193 overall
- Round 6 | No. 197 overall (from MIA)
The Colts could very well still address the defensive tackle position during the draft, but it’s hard seeing that position being a priority. Obviously, the big board will ultimately have the final say, but the Colts could now focus on other spots like quarterback and wide receiver.
The Buckner trade will give the Colts an immediate and elite upgrade at the three-technique while the 49ers get an additional first-round pick. It will be interesting to see how the Colts go about their draft now that they don’t have a first-rounder.
Regardless, Ballard will continue to emphasize the draft after making arguably the biggest splash of his career as a general manager.
