Colts’ undrafted free agent profile: CB Jamal Peters

The Indianapolis Colts brought in over a dozen prospects to the 90-man roster following the 2019 NFL Draft as free agents hoping to add more competition across the board.

Name: Jamal Peters
College: Mississippi State
Position: CB
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 219 pounds

Quick Hits

  • Ran a 4.63 in the 40-yard dash. Has solid length with 32 3/8-inch arms.
  • Played in 46 career games while making 16 starts. Totaled 99 tackles, 10 pass breakups and three interceptions.
  • From Lance Zierlein of NFL.com: “The tape and production isn’t good enough to warrant anything more than later Day 3 consideration, but he’s a decent athlete and his size and length are rare commodities that zone-heavy teams will want to cultivate. He’s not made for consistent man coverage and if he struggles to develop in zone, he could get moved to safety. Peters has developmental potential in the right scheme, but the floor is also lower than teams might like.”

Fit with the Colts

The Colts wound up adding two cornerbacks to the defense with their 2019 draft haul: Second-round pick Rock Ya-Sin and fifth-round pick Marvell Tell, who is converting from the safety position. The competition will be fierce in the secondary, but Peters has some traits to like.

His size is rare for the cornerback position, but it would help him on special teams if he’s able to claim a spot. The Colts could like his versatility to work all over the secondary even though he would be a major project to begin with.

Conclusion

It’s not easy for these undrafted free agents to crack the initial 53-man roster, especially now with the Colts having added solid depth throughout the defense over the last two years. The Colts might look at Peters’ measurements and keep him on the practice squad for further development, but it could be difficult for him to crack the active roster in September.
