Background
A product of the University of Texas, Johnson signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft. He didn’t see any time on the active roster during his rookie season but was a member of the Eagles team that won Super Bowl LII.
Johnson was traded to the Seattle Seahawks as a part of the Michael Bennett deal in March 2018. He spent the offseason with the Seahawks until the Colts traded for Johnson at the beginning of September.
He played in five games with the Colts recording six receptions for 102 yards and one touchdown before suffering a season-ending ankle injury that forced him to be placed on the injured reserve list following the Week 6 loss to the New York Jets.
2019 Outlook
While the Colts are certain to have a crowded competition at wide receiver during training camp, Johnson is one of the under-the-radar names to watch at the position. He was solid in the six games with the Colts during the 2018 season, and head coach Frank Reich is fond of him as their relationship spans back to their days with the Eagles.
Johnson is likely competing for one of the final roster spots with guys like Daurice Fountain, Zach Pascal and Ashton Dulin to name a few. He’s a fast and explosive wide receiver that could make a run for the final spot.
Bottom Line
Guessing which wide receiver will claim one of the final spots in the room is nearly impossible. However, don’t be surprised if Johnson is one of the players leading that charge during training camp and the preseason games.
