Background
Taken in the fifth round of the 2018 draft out of Northern Iowa, Fountain joined the Colts as a raw prospect but one that has some upside given his size and athleticism.
Fountain didn’t get to see the field much at all during his rookie season. He spent the majority of it on the practice squad before being called up to the active roster for the final few weeks. He didn’t record a reception and only saw three defensive snaps.
2019 Outlook
Fountain will be entering a highly-competitive wide receiver room when training camp arrives at the end of July. He’s likely going to be battling for one of the final spots on the depth chart with a handful of players in a similar situation.
While Fountain will be competing for one of the last roster spots, head coach Frank Reich did notice during the spring that the second-year wideout has shown off some new explosiveness throughout OTAs and minicamp. He will need to continue his improvement of route running as the team dives deeper into the offensive scheme.
Bottom Line
Whether Fountain winds up making the initial roster remains to be seen. He will need a strong performance in training camp and the preseason games—where he’s likely to see a good amount of playing time. If Fountain doesn’t make the initial cut, he’s certainly one of the top candidates to join the practice squad to continue honing his skills.
