Colts’ training camp preview: OT Anthony Castonzo

As we continue with our training camp previews, we now begin to look at the Indianapolis Colts offensive line—one of the strongest units on the roster.

Name: Anthony Castonzo
Position: LT
Height: 6-foot-7
Weight: 311
Age: 30
Year Drafted: 2011 (first round)

Background

Selected in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Colts, Castonzo has been a steady force protecting the blind side of the quarterback since the first day he arrived at the facility. He’s started all 16 games in five of his eight seasons while proving to be a solid pass protector.

Castonzo might be coming off of one of his best seasons production wise. Though he battled an injury that kept him off of the field until Week 6 of the regular season, his return at that time truly brought the Colts offensive line to another level.

He wound up starting the final 11 games of the regular season and the two playoff games for the Colts while also being a consistent blocker both in the passing game and in the run game.

2019 Outlook

There isn’t much to say about Castonzo’s outlook for the upcoming season. As long as he’s healthy, he will be the one protecting franchise quarterback Andrew Luck’s blindside—as he has since the latter entered the league in 2012.

What is interesting about Castonzo is what the Colts will do following the 2019 season. His contract is in its final year, which means Indy has a decision to make. They can extend him on a short deal while they try to find his successor or they can let him walk in free agency as a 31-year-old.

My guess is that they wind up extending him for another two or even three years if his production and health remain consistent.

Bottom Line

Castonzo is a big piece of the offensive line as the unit’s veteran leader. The group is mostly young in talent, and the Boston College product is there to solidify the edge while providing insight as a veteran. He’ll be the starter as long as he’s healthy, but the Colts do have a decision to make with his contract following the season.
