Colts’ training camp preview: DT Tyquan Lewis

As training camp nears with the start on July 25, we continue to take a look at the interior defensive line for the Indianapolis Colts.

Name: Tyquan Lewis
Position: DT/DE
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 277
Age: 24
Year Drafted: 2018 (second round)

Background

Coming out of Ohio State, Lewis was selected by the Colts in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Though a toe injury forced Lewis to start his rookie campaign on the injured reserve list, Lewis would return for the second half of the season to play eight games (six starts) while recording 2.0 sacks, eight quarterback hits, 3.0 tackles for loss.

2019 Outlook

It will be interesting to see where Lewis lines up primarily but with the addition of veteran defensive end Justin Houston, the expectation is that the former will be competing more at the defensive tackle spot.

The Colts know Lewis is versatile enough to work both on the inside and on the edge when necessary, but it is likely he will begin training camp battling with Denice Autry for snaps at the three-technique.

Given how much the Colts value versatility in their defensive line, Lewis should also be expected to see some work at defensive end as well.

Bottom Line

The Colts have high hopes for Lewis as he enters Year 2. He’s the type of versatile pass rusher they like to work primarily on the inside. It should be interesting to see what kind of role he has, but the Colts should be expected to give him a significant one in 2019.
