We continue our training camp previews looking at the Indianapolis Colts interior defensive line and one of the sleepers along the unit.

Background
A second-round pick with the Oakland Raiders in the 2016 draft out of Illinois, Ward earned a starting role in the defensive front during his rookie season. He appeared in 16 games and made 13 starts while recording 10 quarterback hits.
Ward was traded to the Dallas Cowboys during the 2018 offseason and was cut during final roster cuts just before the season. The Colts signed him to the practice squad on Sept. 3, 2018, and called him up to the active roster 10 days later.
Ward played six games while recording 3.0 sacks for the Colts before suffering an ankle injury that forced him to spend the rest of the campaign on the injured reserve list.
2019 Outlook
Since arriving to the Colts before the 2018 season, there has been some promise shown from Ward. He likely won’t be one of the starters in the unit, but he has a chance to compete for a significant role.
Given that the defensive tackle room has several spots up for grabs, Ward can claim a role with a strong showing during training camp and the preseason games. He’s proven to be a strong fit for the Colts in their aggressive gap-shooting front.
Ward is likely competing with Caraun Reid, Sterling Shippy and Grover Stewart for playing time.
Bottom Line
There is a lot to like about Ward’s game and his fit with the Colts. He’s able to get upfield in their aggressive scheme and is young enough to continue development of his game. He might not hold a major role for the Colts, but he could be productive along the interior.
