Colts’ training camp preview: DE Gerri Green

We continue with our training camp previews taking a look at one of the new additions of the Indianapolis Colts defensive line.

Name: Gerri Green
Position: DE
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 252
Age: 23
Year Drafted: 2019 (sixth round)

Background

Green was selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft as a part of an extremely defensive heavy class. Coming out of Mississippi State, Green’s athleticism and character fit exactly what the Colts look for in prospects.

In 12 games during the 2018 season, Green recorded 31 tackles (eight solo), 7.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

2019 Outlook

The top of the defensive end room is solidified with veterans Jabaal Sheard and Justin Houston likely fitting into starting roles. This leaves Green fighting with a handful of other young pass rushers for depth spots in the room.

Green, who is athletic enough with some upside and extremely high character, is a project to begin his career. As a sixth-round pick, he has no guarantee of making the roster when the cuts come along, but that isn’t to say the Colts don’t value him.

Green will be competing with Kemoko Turay, Al-Quadin Muhammad, Obum Gwacham and Dadi Nicolas for the final spots in the defensive line room.

Bottom Line

Green is still a raw player in terms of developing his game. He has enough athleticism and character to warrant consideration for one of the final roster spots. However, he would make a fine addition to the practice squad if he doesn’t make it—which would allow him to focus on developing his game further.
