Colts to ramp up Andrew Luck’s throwing at training camp

The offseason is officially over for the Indianapolis Colts as the team wrapped up minicamp Thursday now with a focus on training camp at the end of July.

Among the storylines to watch when training camp does arrive is the eager return of quarterback Andrew Luck, who missed the entire team portion of the spring dealing with a calf strain. It hasn’t kept him from throwing, though, and head coach Frank Reich expected a potential increase in that area.

“Probably a little bit more than he did last year,” Reich told reporters Tuesday. “There are still going to be days – he and I have talked about this already – there are still going to be a day or two off here or there. We will be selective about that.”

Luck made it clear that he believes he will be ready for training camp despite having missed the majority of the spring. The 29-year-old quarterback still made sure to keep his arm in shape even though he wasn’t participating in team drills during OTAs and minicamp.

The franchise quarterback noted that while he’s taking precaution with the calf strain, he hasn’t lightened his workload throwing a football.

“I have thrown significantly sort of off my feet to make sure I don’t aggravate something,” Luck told reporters Tuesday. “I keep my arm in shape certainly and there is a bunch to do.”

The script has been flipped with Luck almost a year after there was major concern about his throwing workload coming off of shoulder surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2018 season.

Now, he’s preparing for a crucial season by ramping up his throwing once training camp arrives at the end of July.
