Colts take QB Jacob Eason, WR Tee Higgins in Draft Wire mock

The 2020 NFL draft is still scheduled for the end of April, which means the Indianapolis Colts are hard at work trying to do whatever they can to finalize their draft board.

With the draft just under a month away and still on schedule, the league has just gotten through the big wave of free agency. With that, most of the big moves have already been made and the league will settle before entering the draft.

Luke Easterling over at Draft Wire conducted a four-round mock draftfour-round mock draft following the big moves of free agency. Here’s a breakdown of what the haul for the Colts looks like:

No. 34 | Jacob Eason | QB | Washington

Even after signing Philip Rivers to a one-year deal, the Colts are likely looking at the quarterback position in the draft. Whether that comes here in the second round with their first pick in the draft or whether they decide to wait on the position, it is likely the Colts will try to address the quarterback room.

Eason is certainly an intriguing prospect. He brings some big arm talent and intriguing qualities for the Colts to develop. But they would have to develop him. Matt Danely over at Stampede Blue did a wonderful job highlighting Eason as a prospect.

Overall, I’m very intrigued with Eason. He’s got a lot of potential at the next level, and looks to have the skillset that teams will want to bring in with hopes of developing a guy into a potential starter. Eason is a fiery guy, he stands tall in the pocket, delivers a beautifully accurate ball the vast majority of the time, and typically makes the right decision.

With Rivers and Brissett under contract through 2020, the Colts should have time to develop Eason.

No. 44 | Tee Higgins | WR | Clemson

Outside of T.Y. Hilton, there isn’t a whole lot proven in the wide receiver room. Zach Pascal stepped up in a big way and should have a complementary role but there is still some talent needed at the top. Higgins is a polarizing prospect. His athleticism and separation ability is in question but his ability to make contested catches while possessing the X-receiver build is intriguing.

Some might believe a talent like Brandon Aiyuk or Michael Pittman is a better fit here for the Colts, but Higgins does have the type of playmaking ability that Rivers likes on the outside. Given his history with Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams, Higgins could be a productive piece to the offense. Include the fact that the Colts tried out Devin Funchess in the slot before his injury means they could try to do something similar while getting him developed on the outside.

No. 75 | Jonathan Greenard | EDGE | Florida

After making moves to add to the interior defensive line, the Colts are likely to add another piece to the edge room in the draft. They could look to do so on any day in the draft. Greenard has plenty of intrigue both as an athlete and as a player in the locker room.

Fitting the mold of Kemoko Turkey and Ben Banogu, Greenard brings plenty of bend and flexibility when running the arc. There is development that needs to take place, especially in terms of his plan as a pass rusher but that’s where Robert Mathis comes in. The bend, athleticism and impact as a high-upside pass rusher make him an intriguing target in the third round.

No. 122 | Reggie Robinson | CB | Tulsa

Going without an offensive tackle through the first four rounds doesn’t really seem like a Chris Ballard move, but there is no denying the Colts will need to target the cornerback position. Even after adding Xavier Rhodes on a one-year deal, some depth and talent is needed in the room.

He doesn’t quite hit the length threshold that Ballard likes in his cornerbacks, but there is reason to believe Robinson can turn into a solid zone corner. He doesn’t have amazing athleticism or length at the position, but given how much the Colts run zone coverage, there is potential for him to be a solid depth piece.
