The Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Jacoby Brissett to a two-year deal before the 2019 season following the surprise retirement of their franchise signal-caller. The hope is that they would be able to find more information about the direction they’re headed.
Even after 15 starts during the regular season, general manager Chris Ballard is still unsure what the consensus is about Brissett’s future with the team. He enters the final year of his current contract, but Ballard still needs to see more from the 27-year-old.
“I said this at the end of the year that we still need more. We’ve still got to find out more,” Ballard said at the NFL combine. “At the end of the day, unfortunately for quarterbacks even though it might not be all their fault – when you go 7-9 and don’t accomplish the goals that you want to accomplish, you’re going to shoulder a lot of the blame.”
Brissett’s 2019 season wasn’t exactly what was expected. He had 14 touchdown passes through the first six games but regression hit him extremely quickly. Couple that with an MCL sprain in Week 9 and the injuries to the wide receiver corps, Brissett’s final line was not encouraging at all.
Ballard and the Colts still stand behind Brissett. A strong locker room leader and a captain, Brissett finished with 18 touchdown passes and six interceptions while averaging 6.6 yards per attempt.
“We did a two-year deal with Jacoby (Brissett) to find out kind of – we like Jacoby Brissett, love what he stands for and it was almost a tale of two seasons with him,” Ballard said. “We did the short-term deal to see what we had.”
The Colts could very well be in the quarterback market this offseason, though it is most likely to come through the 2020 NFL draft. Brissett could get another shot as the starter even if the Colts take a quarterback as early.
The offseason should be interesting for the Colts, but don’t be surprised if Brissett gets another shot in 2020.
