Colts still gauging severity of Trey Burton’s calf injury

Indianapolis Colts tight end Trey Burton had to leave Saturday’s final training camp scrimmage early due to a calf injury, and the team is still waiting to find out the severity of it.

Burton, who has been having an excellent camp, walked gingerly off the field without putting much weight on the injured leg. As the move tight end in the offense, the calf injury could wind up being a major blow to a vital position in the passing game.

Head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday that the team is still in wait-and-see mode when it comes to a timetable for Burton’s injury.

“A calf injury, those things can range in a number of weeks. Still kind of waiting on it to settle down for a day or two to really get a better gauge to how long it may be,” Reich said Monday. “I can tell you those types of things are generally more than two weeks if you get it and get it good, but we will just have to see how it settles down here over the next couple of days.”

As starter Jack Doyle deals with a neck injury that held him out of Saturday’s scrimmage, the Colts are seemingly thin when it comes to healthy tight ends. Mo Alie-Cox will be seeing more time if Burton misses significant time while undrafted rookie Ferrod Green out of Mississippi State has made a nice handful of plays with the reps he’s been given.

Burton has been emerging as an underrated target for new quarterback Philip Rivers, who has a history of targeting the tight end position. With 13 days remaining until the Week 1 opener, this will be an injury to monitor closely.
