Colts sign duo of safeties, waive S Matthias Farley

The Indianapolis Colts signed safeties Micah Abernathy and Jacob Thieneman and waived safety Matthias Farley, the team announced Monday.

Despite having a solid showing early in his career, Farley was buried on the Colts depth chart at safety behind Malik Hooker, Clayton Geathers, Khari Willis and George Odum.

Here’s what the press release from the Colts said about Abernathy and Thieneman:

Abernathy, 6-0, 195 pounds, participated in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2019 training camp. He also participated in the Minnesota Vikings’ 2019 offseason program. Abernathy originally signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2019. Collegiately, he played in 44 games (30 starts) at Tennessee and compiled 197 tackles (128 solo), 7.0 tackles for loss, 11 passes defensed, two interceptions and five fumble recoveries.

Thieneman, 6-1, 215 pounds, participated in the New York Giants’ 2019 offseason program before being placed on the team’s Injured Reserve list on May 15, 2019. He was waived from the Giants’ Injured Reserve list on June 13. Thieneman originally signed with New York as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2019. Collegiately, the Noblesville, Ind. native appeared in 34 games (24 starts) at Purdue and tallied 170 tackles (113 solo), 13.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, 11 passes defensed, three interceptions, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.

The Colts only had to waive one player to make room for two because Andrew Luck was placed on the Reserve/Retired list on Sunday.
