Colts see Daurice Fountain playing with more consistency

The Indianapolis Colts have a deep wide receiver competition going on during training camp, and another name has emerged in the battle in the form of Daurice Fountain.

After somewhat of a disappointing rookie season, Fountain has turned the corner in his development and is enjoying an extremely strong training camp to begin his second campaign.

While there are several aspects that have improved over the last year, offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni has seen one prominent trait help Fountain string days together.

“Yeah, I think he’s starting to show – really what I’m really impressed with Reece (Fountain) is that he’s starting to show more consistency,” Sirianni told reporters Sunday. “He’s got that body that you want from a receiver. He’s big, strong and physical. Now he’s starting to get a little quicker. Now he’s being a little quicker out of the break and he’s doing a good job of catching contested balls.”

Fountain has been putting together some extremely strong days at training camp on a consistent basis, rather than just flashing a day or two here and there. The consistency is helping him stay in the competition, and it has translated to the game field.

Amid the preseason-opening loss against the Buffalo Bills, Fountain shined bright. He showed off that contested catch ability Sirianni was talking about en route to leading the team with five catches for 63 yards.

What Sirianni is most looking forward to is how Fountain is improving after the catch.

“So, he’s creating more space to get those opportunities. Now we’re not fully getting to see it in practice because we are not tackling, but I’m excited to keep throwing him the ball and get some run and catch for him for the games coming,” Sirianni said.

The Colts still have a little bit less than a month before roster cuts are made. Fountain has fully entered the wide receiver battle and should continue to do so if he stays consistent.
