Colts routed by Jaguars, 37-20: Everything we know from Week 6

The Indianapolis Colts (3-3) were defeated by the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2) on Sunday, 37-20, at TIAA Bank Field.

The Week 6 loss was the biggest deficit the Colts faced this season and even though they showed some life in the fourth quarter, it was far too late after falling down 31-6 during the third quarter.

It was over when...

The Jaguars scored a 10-yard touchdown on a pass from Trevor Lawrence to tight end Brenton Strange with four minutes left in the third quarter to give Jacksonville a 31-6 lead. At that point, the lead was far too insurmountable.

Keys to the game

Morgan Tencza-USA TODAY Sports
  • The Colts offense struggled mightily on third downs, converting just 4-of-14 attempts (29%) on the day.
  • The Jaguars scored 17 points off turnovers, two touchdowns and a field goal.
  • The offense averaged just 4.7 yards per play, but the defense held the Jaguars offense to just 3.8 yards per play.
  • The offensive line and Gardner Minshew allowed three sacks and eight quarterback hits.
  • The Jaguars defense broke up nine passes against Minshew and the Colts receivers.

3 Stars of the game

Jenna Watson/IndyStar
  1. WR Michael Pittman Jr.: The passing offense struggled to find any consistency, but Pittman Jr. showed up when the offense needed it. He finished the game with nine receptions for 109 yards on 14 targets.
  2. CB Kenny Moore II: The defense had no answer for the Jaguars offense, but Moore had three tackles for loss and rarely was targeted in coverage.
  3. CB Julius Brents: The rookie was likely responsible for a touchdown to Christian Kirk, but he also had two passes defensed and recorded his first interception.

Gardner Minshew shrinks in revenge game

It was a fun narrative until the game actually started. Minshew simply did not have it against the team that drafted him in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. Filling in for the injured Anthony Richardson, Minshew completed 33-of-55 passes (60%) for 329 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions, and a 60.3 passer rating. He also lost a fumble that resulted in a touchdown for the Jaguars on the ensuing drive. Minshew struggled to handle pressure all game, and he had several turnover-worthy throws.

Injuries

  • RT Braden Smith (foot/wrist/hip) was inactive due to a few injuries.
  • WR Alec Pierce (shoulder) exited the game in the fourth quarter and did not return.

  • The Colts have now lost their last nine road games against the Jaguars.
  • LB Zaire Franklin recorded eight total tackles, snapping a five-game streak of recording at least 12 tackles.
  • WR Josh Downs scored the first touchdown of his career while CB Julius Brents recorded the first interception of his career.
  • K Matt Gay has now made eight consecutive field-goal attempts of at least 50 yards dating back to last season (via Brett Douglas).
  • On the Colts’ opening drive, they took 16 plays before kicking a field goal. That’s the most on a single scoring drive this season.
  • DE Samson Ebukam recorded a sack and now has a sack in four of the last five games.
