After coaching in the college ranks from 1986-2003, Martindale made the leap to the NFL by being hired as the linebackers coach for the Oakland Raiders, a role he held for five seasons (2004-2008). He held the same role when he joined the Denver Broncos (2009) while also spending one season as their defensive coordinator (2010).

Martindale then joined the Baltimore Ravens as their linebackers coach for six seasons (2012-2017) before taking on the defensive coordinator role for four seasons (2018-2021).

After his stint in Baltimore was concluded, Martindale was hired by Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen to be the defensive coordinator of the Giants.

The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay.
