The Colts have released linebacker Jonathan Newsome following his arrest for marijuana possession last week.

Newsome was arrested on 17 February when someone called the police to complain of loud music coming from the linebacker’s apartment in Zionsville, Indiana. Newsome was taken into custody on two counts of marijuana possession.

It was the second time in three weeks that police were called to Newsome’s home to investigate a complaint about noise. They were called early in the morning on January 31 when they also found marijuana the house. A friend of Newsome’s was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana that morning.

Newsome, 25, thanked the Colts for the “opportunity of a lifetime” on Twitter, and said he had become “a better football player and a person” despite his mistakes.

The Colts took Newsome in fifth round of the 2014 draft. His first season was a success – he led the team with 6.5 sacks and forced three fumbles – but didn’t manage to replicate those numbers in the second season, with only a single sack and one forced fumble in 14 games.

While at Ball State, Newsome was suspended for two games following an August 2012 possession arrest when a bag containing marijuana was found in his wallet.

The Colts also announced Monday that linebacker Andy Studebaker has been released.
