Colts’ Quenton Nelson snaps 51-game start streak

Indianapolis Colts left guard Quenton Nelson was ruled out for Sunday’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins, which will be the first time he has missed a start in his career.

Spanning across 51 consecutive starts, Nelson has been everything the Colts could have asked for when they selected him No. 6 overall in 2018. He’ll miss the first start of his career on Sunday, but head coach Frank Reich is hopeful he can return in Week 5 for a prime-time game against the Baltimore Ravens.

“Yeah, there is a high ankle sprain involved, but we’re optimistic with Q (Quenton Nelson) that hopefully he’s on the shorter side of that,” Reich said Friday. ” With Q, I wouldn’t rule it out. Because we do have the extra day, we’ll just have to take it day-by-day.”

While the Colts offensive line hasn’t played up to par through the first three games of the season, Nelson has been a bright spot. According to Pro Football Focus, Nelson has yet to allow a single pressure on 101 pass-blocking snaps.

Reich talked about what the Colts will be missing with Nelson on the sideline outside of the fact that the All-Pro talent won’t be on the field.

“He’s an elite leader, not just an elite player. So, you just have to – we’ll pick up the energy. What we talked about this week, is the energy and that stuff really, first and foremost and more than anything, it comes from execution from playing good football,” Reich said. “If we want some good energy on the sideline, no matter what the heat is or no matter what the temperature is, let’s just play good football and let’s execute in all three phases.”

The Colts had five starters ruled out for the game, which makes this a tough issue to overcome, and Nelson will snap a 51-game start streak due to the ankle injury.
