Colts promote QB Chad Kelly, waive WR Deon Cain

The Indianapolis Colts elevated quarterback Chad Kelly and wide receiver Marcus Johnson to the active roster and waived wide receiver Deon Cain and defensive tackle Kyle Peko, the team announced Saturday.

This move is big in two parts. The Colts likely promoted Kelly from the practice squad because quarterback Jacoby Brissett is a game-time decision due to the knee sprain he suffered in Week 9.

There is a chance that Brissett doesn’t suit up if the knee is still barking so the Colts needed to have insurance behind veteran backup Brian Hoyer.

The other big move is the waiving of Cain. Though promising in his skill set, the second-year wide receiver hasn’t made any type of impact despite the many opportunities he was given during the first half of the season.

The Colts still like his potential, but the offense needs productive wide receivers amid the massive injuries the room is going through. Cain simply wasn’t getting it done when he got the chance.

It remains to be seen if Cain will be re-signed to the practice squad, but he will first go through waivers.
