Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Parris Campbell is among one of the most exciting pieces to the offense arriving in 2019, and it appears he’s making progress in picking up the offense.
The second-round pick (No. 59 overall) is expected to be in the thick of the competition for one of the top roles behind T.Y. Hilton—who’s entrenched as the WR1.
Though Campbell didn’t see a ton of work with the first-team offense during the spring, Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni sees the Ohio State product picking up the offense quickly.
“It’s just bringing him along a little bit by little bit. Like I said, everybody is a little different,” Sirianni told reporters last week. “Parris is picking it up very quickly and he’s picking up the techniques that we are asking him to do quickly. He is having a good OTA, mini-camp session.”
With Hilton locked in as the leader atop the wide receiver depth chart, Campbell and a handful of other wide receivers will be competing fiercely for the roles in the room. His biggest competition is likely in the forms of Devin Funchess, Chester Rogers and Deon Cain.
“Obviously he is an instinctive player, but a lot of that started off because of his speed,” Sirianni said. “So when you get that type of athleticism, that type of speed, it really puts a lot of threat into the defense.”
It will be interesting to see how quickly Campbell can carve out a role in the offense and with training camp just over a month away, the rookie wideout will get his chance to prove he deserves a starting spot.
