Colts’ Parris Campbell likely to have limited role to start season

Indianapolis Colts rookie wide receiver Parris Campbell started off training camp on a strong note but hasn’t been able to get back on the field after suffering a hamstring injury.

Though he was close to making a return, Campbell suffered a setback when testing the hamstring. It isn’t clear when the rookie will be making his return, and head coach Frank Reich noted there’s a high chance it limits the second-round pick early on.

“Yeah, it will definitely limit. I mean, we can still, when he’s full speed, he’s full speed. So, rather than having eight plays designed for him, it might be three plays designed for him,” Reich told reporters Wednesday. “And trying to pick, hey, what are the best three or four or five ways to try to use Parris in this game? Rather than play him 40 plays a game, maybe he gets 10 or 15 plays a game and then he gradually builds up from there.”

As one of the prized selections for the Colts in the 2019 draft, Campbell was certainly one of the players that have been among the most intriguing. His skill set works perfectly in the offense, which makes his debut highly anticipated.

Though his roster spot is safe, this does hurt Campbell’s chances to make an immediate impact on the offensive side of the ball. With T.Y. Hilton and Devin Funchess locked in as the starting duo, Campbell’s absence will give others like Chester Rogers, Deon Cain and Daurice Fountain a chance to solidify a role in the room.

It isn’t yet clear what the timetable looks like for Campbell to return from this nagging hamstring injury but even when he does return, it is likely he has a limited role in the offense.
