The Indianapolis Colts backfield took a major step forward with their three young running backs in 2018, which led a season of production that hadn’t been seen in recent years.
Starters: Marlon Mack
Reserves: Nyheim Hines, Jordan Wilkins, Jonathan Williams
2018 position review
It took the majority of the first half for the room to find its footing but once Mack returned fully from his hamstring injury in Week 6, the unit took off to have a solid season. Led by Mack, who averaged 4.7 yards per carry and scored 10 total touchdowns in 12 games, the Colts suddenly had a balanced offense under Frank Reich.
Thanks to a superior offensive line, the Colts enjoyed solid production in the backfield. Mack had somewhat of a breakout campaign while Hines developed nicely as a change-of-pace back and Wilkins showed flashes of what he can do down the stretch in a very limited role.
Offseason outlook
With the trio of Mack, Hines and Wilkins all under contract for the next few seasons, the Colts aren’t in the market to add a starter. Could they add some depth to the unit or a running back that specializes in short-yardage situations? Sure. But they shouldn’t be expected to go after top names like Le’Veon Bell.
Level of concern
Low. Outside of maybe some durability issues, the Colts have in place a solid backfield that can do many things. It’s a versatile, young group that should continue to thrive behind a stout offensive line. They might add another athletic back to the mix, but nothing too heavy.
