Colts officially sign QB Brian Hoyer

The Indianapolis Colts made the signing of quarterback Brian Hoyer official and waived safety Rolan Milligan, the team announced Monday.

Needing a veteran to back up new starter Jacoby Brissett following Andrew Luck’s sudden retirement, the Colts kicked the tires on several options. After Hoyer was released by the New England Patriots on Saturday, the Colts had an immediate interest.

The reported deal for Hoyer is worth three years for $12 million with $9 million guaranteed.

The Colts now have a viable veteran to work behind Brissett in the quarterback room while Phillip Walker works on the practice squad and Chad Kelly serves his two-game suspension.

What happens when Kelly returns in Week 3 from said suspension remains to be seen. It isn’t clear if the Colts want to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster or if they will place Kelly on the practice squad to take the spot of Walker.

Regardless, the Colts have their backup officially behind Brissett as the look to move on from the Andrew Luck era.
