Colts’ Nyheim Hines an underrated red-zone weapon

Indianapolis Colts running back Nyheim Hines had a solid rookie campaign as a change-of-pace back, but he also proved to be an effective weapon in the red zone.

Though Hines’ size and game don’t necessarily envision him being a common red-zone option, he was efficient inside the 20-yard-line during the 2018 season. In fact, he was Pro Football Focus’ third-highest graded running back in the red zone.

NYHEIM HINESINDIANAPOLIS COLTS – 74.0 RED-ZONE GRADE

Last season, Hines averaged 2.18 yards after contact per attempt in the red zone, ranking 14th out of 66 running backs. The rookie also forced a missed tackle once every 0.18 red-zone attempts, tying for 16th at the position. His speed and toughness were a lethal combination in the red-zone last season, and the Colts could benefit by utilizing him more in 2019.

Following his return in Week 6, the backfield belonged to Marlon Mack for the majority of the second half of the season. However, Hines still carved out a role for himself during the regular season.

While he only averaged 3.7 yards per carry, Hines made his work as a pass catcher recording 63 receptions on 81 targets. His reception totals were third-highest among all offensive players while he was fourth in receiving yards.

There is a chance the Colts add to their backfield this offseason, but Hines should have an encouraging outlook for his second year after carving out what was a very solid role in the passing game.
