Darius Leonard is a devastating presence on the football field. Off it, a woman described him as an angel in a video she posted on Sunday.
The Indianapolis Colts linebacker appeared to be changing that woman’s tire on the side of the road. He was down on his knees to make the swap while the woman took a video of him at work.
The Twitter user, Martha Isbell, did not respond for comment at the time of publication for this article.
UPDATE: The Indy Star has more details on this, including that Isbell was Leonard’s biology teacher in high school and she was on her way to church when he pulled over to to help:
“He knew it was me,” she said. “If I had been a complete stranger, he still would have done it anyway. He cares enough to help anyone.”
She also added that he had some skills with the jack:
“Oh, he was real quick. The biggest issue was the jack. I had a pitiful jack and he worked with that jack until he got it right,” she said. “He wanted to make sure I had what I needed and was safe before he left.”
As he changed the tire, Isbell repeatedly thanked him. “Hey, no problem,” he is shown saying on the video.
“Thank the Lord for angels…” she says to him. Isbell made it to church for Easter.
“And he just kept going,” she said, “like it was nothing.”
The Colts drafted Leonard in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of South Carolina State. He finished the season with 163 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions, and was named a First-Team All-Pro and Defensive Rookie of the Year.
