Colts, Jacoby Brissett agree to 2-year extension

The Indianapolis Colts and quarterback Jacoby Brissett have reached agreement on a contract extension that is expected to be signed over the next 24 hours.

After signing veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer to a three-year deal to be the backup to Brissett, the Colts want to lock up the latter for the long term. He had been slated for a base salary of $2 million this year.

The news was first reported by Ben Volin of the Boston Globe and confirmed by Mike Chappell of Fox59.

The contract extension is for two years and $30 million, including $20 million guaranteed, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

As Brissett enters the final year of his rookie contract, there was the question of whether the Colts would try to get him to sign an extension to ensure stability in the quarterback room.

Though Brissett likely could have gotten a nice deal had he hit the market following the 2019 season, there is also the notion that he could have wanted to secure his future for the upcoming seasons with a contract.

In the wake of Andrew Luck’s unexpected retirement last month, Brissett was elevated to starter, a role he served in for 15 games as Luck sat out the 2017 season with a shoulder injury.
