The Indianapolis Colts have made it known this offseason that despite their love for the current players in the backfield, they will continue to search for options that could work in the rotation.
With the 2019 NFL Draft quickly approaching, the Colts are hosting Alabama running back Josh Jacobs on a pre-draft visit Thursday.
Even though Marlon Mack showed plenty of promise during the 2018 season when he finally returned healthy following a hamstring injury, the Colts are likely looking for another piece to add to the backfield, especially one that might be able to churn out short yardage situations.
Here’s what Gavino Borquez of The Draft Wire said about Jacobs back in February:
His lack of touches may be an issue to some teams, but he showed to be a game-changing offensive threat for the Crimson Tide in that small sample size. He has exceptional size, power, elusive traits, receiving ability, balance and center of gravity to pick up yards after contact with the vision and acceleration to be a home-run finisher any time he touches the ball.
Jacobs projects as a starting running back in the NFL capable of high-volume touches and is ideally suited in an outside zone rushing system, but fits every offensive scheme comfortably due to his versatility.
Jacobs is currently a fringe first-round prospect. It seems unlikely the Colts would spend their first-round pick on Jacobs, but he could be on their radar later if they like him enough.
In 2018, Jacobs took 120 carries for 640 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging 5.3 yards per carry.
