Colts have 5th-best QB situation says Sports Illustrated

The Indianapolis Colts must be relieved this offseason not having to worry about franchise quarterback Andrew Luck dealing with an injury that could cloud his upcoming campaign for the first time in multiple seasons.

With Luck returning to his high level of play in 2018 leading an efficient Colts offense and with Jacoby Brissett working as arguably the best backup quarterback in the NFL, there should be ample confidence in the room.

Sports Illustrated’s Connor Orr certainly holds that opinion as he rated the Colts quarterback situation as the fifth-best in the NFL.

5. Indianapolis Colts

Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett, Phillip Walker

Wanted to list them higher. Brissett could start for a handful of NFL teams right now, and if Luck continues progressing, that sub-$25 million a year deal looks like a bargain.

Luck is coming off of one of his best seasons as a passer. It was undoubtedly his most efficient setting career-high marks in completion percentage (67.3) and passer rating (98.7). He was also second in the NFL with 39 touchdown passes behind only Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Luck is signed through the 2021 season so the Colts won’t have to start thinking about an extension for a year or two.

Brissett, on the other hand, is a free agent following the 2019 season. There is always the possibility he can be traded in order for the Colts to get at least something before he likely departs in the 2020 free agency, but odds are he will remain with the Colts through the season.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard has continuously emphasized how much value Brissett has both as the backup quarterback on the field and in the locker room.

The Colts have just about as secure of a quarterback room as they could hope for during the 2019 season, which will allow them to address other areas of the roster in the upcoming NFL Draft.
