Colts GM Chris Ballard talks QB Jordan Love

The Indianapolis Colts are among the teams that could be in the market to select a quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft, and one of the top prospects is Utah State’s Jordan Love.

Though there are still parts of his game that need to develop, Love could be the target for the Colts at the No. 13 overall pick in the draft. General manager Chris Ballard has a lot of decisions to make with this pick.

He talked about one of the top prospects in the draft at the NFL scouting combine this week.

“Look, he is very talented and he had a heck of a season in 2018 under Coach (Matt) Wells who is now at Texas Tech. I mean look from what I remember, thinking back when Matt Ryan was coming out of Boston College, I want to say he threw 19 (or) 20,” Ballard said. “So you’ve got to break down each one of those interceptions and why did they happen. It is not always on the quarterback. I’m not saying that is the case in this situation, but we’ve got to break all those down and figure out where we are at.”

It isn’t at all clear how the Colts are going to go about the quarterback position. They could stick with Jacoby Brissett, they could sign a veteran in free agency or they could draft a young quarterback.

Love’s tape is filled with traits that could pay off big time for the Colts if they can develop him. He has a big arm, mobility and the ability to drive the ball downfield.

The Colts have had some contact with Love throughout the pre-draft process and will likely bring him in for a formal interview before the draft. That’s something they will do with most of the prospects in the draft.

But Love is an intriguing fit for the Colts because he won’t have to start right away. He can sit and learn from Frank Reich until he’s ready to start, which could have some big payoff.

Love is one of the top prospects for the Colts in the draft and while we don’t know what they will do, he is likely one of the top options at No. 13.
