Colts’ Frank Reich had no update on RT Braden Smith

Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich met with the media Friday following the team’s 45-30 win over the New York Jets but had no injury update on right tackle Braden Smith.

Smith exited the prime-time game on Thursday night during the second half due to what was diagnosed as a triceps injury. He was replaced by Matt Pryor, who wound up playing well against an already-defeated Jets defense.

But Reich hadn’t gotten an update about Smith’s status or prognosis when he met with the media Friday afternoon.

“No, no update. I haven’t talked with anybody yet this morning,” Reich said.

It’s been a tough year for Smith when it comes to his health. After signing a massive $72 million deal just before the regular season started, Smith has played in just two full games.

He opened in his typical starting role against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 but wound up suffering a foot injury. The Colts initially thought it would be just one or two weeks that Smith would miss due to the injury so they opted against putting him on the injured reserve list.

Those two weeks turned into six and Smith wouldn’t make his return until the Week 8 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, which he seemingly came out unscathed.

But then Smith was ruled out during the second half of Thursday night’s game. It isn’t clear how severe the injury is and given that the game was pretty out of hand when he was ruled out, it’s hard to gauge whether that was because of the injury or simply a precaution in a blowout.

Regardless, the Colts will have a few extra days to get some rest before their first matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars this season in Week 10. Hopefully, that will be enough time for Smith to heal up if the injury isn’t too severe.
