Colts expect a slugfest in AFC South race

Entering Week 5 of the 2019 season, the Indianapolis Colts and the rest of the AFC South are all staring at each other with the same record, and all four teams are expecting a tight race to the end.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard especially believes the race for the top spot in the division is going to be a close and exciting race during the second half of the regular season.

“Look, and I think I said this during the offseason: Jacksonville, Tennessee and Houston are all very well-coached football teams with good players, and strengths and weaknesses like everybody has,” Ballard told Colts.com. “But we think it’s gonna be a slugfest all the way down to the finish.”

With all four teams sitting with a 2-2 record, the division will be wide open and up for grabs during the second half. The Colts are likely to come out of their bye week with a chance to make up ground immediately with a divisional matchup against the Houston Texans.

Those division games will be the most important, especially seeing as they are typically close matchups.

“I mean, I think you saw our game in Tennessee that came down to the last possession, it was back and forth on a real hot day,” Ballard said. “I think you saw it with Jacksonville going to Houston, with Tennessee going down to Jacksonville. And they’re vitally important in the division standings that these division games that you take ‘em seriously and you win ‘em, and we keep our eye on that. But it is a highly competitive division with some very good coaches and football teams.”

The Colts will have a tough road with a difficult schedule in the second half fo the season, but they feel the division is wide open and are preparing to slug it out coming out of the bye week.
