Colts didn’t sign ex-Broncos QB Chad Kelly after all

Last month, The Athletic’s Tim Graham reported that the Indianapolis Colts planned to sign former Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly. It turns out Kelly was merely invited to rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

The Colts signed four tryout players after rookie minicamp concluded, and Kelly wasn’t among them. So the 25-year-old is still a free agent. Indy may consider Kelly down the road, but he’s not a Colt right now.

Indianapolis has three QBs on their 90-man offseason roster: Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett and Phillip Walker. The Colts took four quarterbacks to training camp last year, so another may be added to the roster.

The Broncos selected Kelly with the final pick in the 2017 NFL draft, and he spent his rookie season on injured reserve. Kelly made the team’s 53-man roster last year but was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing on Oct. 23. Denver cut him the next day.

The Broncos have completely moved on from Kelly and have four QBs at OTAs: Joe Flacco, Kevin Hogan, Drew Lock and Brett Rypien.
