Colts’ Devin Funchess looking to build chemistry with Andrew Luck

It can take a player time to build a rapport with his new team. While it’s an exciting time for new Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Devin Funchess, he knows building that rapport with quarterback Andrew Luck is essential.

The Colts are still in the very early stages of the offseason workout program. Luck and Funchess have probably just introduced themselves to each other. There is a long way to go before the trust is built between the players.

But building that chemistry with Luck is something Funchess looks forward to doing.

“He’s got to see how I run. I’ve got to see what the angles are coming out when he throws the ball,” Funchess told reporters Tuesday. “Then personally-wise – just see what type of guy he is and see what type of guy I am. You’ve got to know the person and trust the person.”

The former second-round pick finished his rookie contract with the Carolina Panthers following the 2018 season. He signed a one-year deal worth up to $13 million with the Colts during free agency. Funchess was the first outside free agent the Colts brought in.

The wide receiver room he enters is facing a multitude of questions. Outside of T.Y. Hilton, there are very few solidified roles. Funchess has a lot of upside to offer as a boundary receiver, but he could also see some time in the slot.

Despite his massive frame, Funchess works well running routes. He’s able to sink his hips into his breaks effectively, which allows him to create separation.

It will be interesting to see how Funchess fits in the wide receiver room, but building chemistry with Luck will be vital in carving out that role.
