Colts’ Deon Cain: ‘I’m really at a good place right now’

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Deon Cain is looking to make a triumphant comeback after his rookie season was lost due to a torn ACL he suffered during the preseason.

The former sixth-round pick out of Clemson has shown flashes of that high potential in the Colts offense. Now, over one year removed from suffering the injury, Cain feels he’s gaining confidence in his game every day.

“I’m feeling good out there,” Cain told reporters Monday. “Just really trying to stick to my routine that my trainers have gotten me on throughout the day with a few days of practicing and take a few days of maintenance off just trying to get my legs back under me. I’m really at a good place right now and just really trying to stick to it.”

There was plenty of hype for Cain during the 2018 preseason as he was battling for the WR2 job opposite T.Y. Hilton. While he’s competing more for a depth role right now, Cain has been flashing in training camp showing off the athleticism and route running the Colts fell in with during the pre-draft process.

His roster spot isn’t guaranteed and while he might have a leg up in the competition for one of the final three spots, Cain knows there are a handful of players in the room vying for the same thing.

“It’s really a flat line right now. Everybody is literally on the same page because everybody is out there competing and making plays and stuff like that. I don’t really try to buy into it too much because I just have to focus on doing my job,” Cain said. “As of right now, I’m excited with these guys right now. I’ve never been around so much talent with these guys and seeing how these guys come out to practice and work every day – it’s great. It’s a great thing.”

Cain was solid in his limited work during the preseason opener. He got through unscathed, which is the most important part. He wound up catching two of four targets for 15 yards.

The hype train is rolling again with Cain making some big plays in training camp. He still has a long way to go, but his confidence is building every day that he’s on the field.
