Colts’ Carson Wentz receives $10 million roster bonus

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz received a $10 million roster bonus on Friday as a part of his salary for the 2021 season.

While the Philadelphia Eagles are responsible for the largest dead cap hit in NFL history, the Colts are the ones taking on the existing contract when it comes to Wentz.

Wentz got his $10 million roster bonus on Friday and will receive $15.4 million in base salary during the 2021 campaign. That brings the total cap hit to $25.4 million for the Colts this season.

In addition to receiving his roster bonus for 2021, $15 million of his base salary in 2022 also became fully guaranteed on Friday. Wentz is set to make $22 million in 2022 with a large chunk of that now being guaranteed. If Wentz is still on the roster on the third day of the new league year in 2022, his salary that season becomes fully guaranteed.

After that, the Colts can cut ties with Wentz without incurring any dead cap penalties.

The Colts are hoping it won’t come down to that and that Wentz can be their franchise quarterback moving forward with Frank Reich. Whether that will happen remains to be seen, but Wentz will be paid handsomely over the next two seasons.
