Colts beat Bengals, 13-6, to conclude preseason: Instant analysis

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up the preseason Thursday night with a 13-6 win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night at Paul Brown Stadium.

The game was over when…

…The Colts stuffed a fourth-and-goal attempt late in the fourth quarter.

Game Balls

  • WR Parris Campbell: The rookie made his preseason debut and flashed that dangerous speed that made him a second-round pick. He finished catching three passes for 42 yards.
  • QB Chad Kelly: He solidified his potential spot as the backup quarterback if the Colts don’t add a veteran—though it is likely they will. He was 13-for-16 for 138 yards and an interception but added a seven-yard touchdown run.
  • LB E.J. Speed: The rookie linebacker was all over the field during the first half making impact plays against the run and in coverage.
  • DE Carroll Phillips: Might be a long shot to make the roster, but Phillips added two more sacks to his preseason total.

Key Stats

  • 3.18: The Colts backfield averaged 3.18 yards per carry on the ground.
  • 3: Marvell Tell III finished the game with a team-high three passes defended.

Quick Hits

  • WR Krishawn Hogan had another solid night, proving he belongs on an NFL roster.
  • Chad Kelly started the game at QB, playing the entire first half. Phillip Walker finished the game, taking over at the beginning of the second half.
  • Walker finished the game 8-for-16 for 90 yards and a 67.2 passer rating.
  • UDFA DT Sterling Shippy has shown plenty of explosiveness from the interior.
  • Offensive line depth continues to be a major concern, especially in pass protection.
  • WR Penny Hart shot any chance of making the roster after fumbling two punts, losing them both.
  • Rookie CB Marvell Tell finished his preseason on a high note with a few PBUs and some nice tackles.

Injuries

  • LB Skai Moore suffered a burner but returned in the second half.
  • WR Marcus Johnson was evaluated for a concussion in the third quarter and didn’t return.

Up Next: The Colts begin the 2019 regular season on Sept. 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
