Colts’ Andrew Luck keeping his arm in shape despite calf injury

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will have missed his third consecutive spring when minicamp ends Thursday, but this time it is more out of the team being conservative.

Luck has been dealing with a calf strain for the better part of the last month and while that has kept him from participating in team workouts this spring, the franchise quarterback is still keeping his arm in shape.

“I have thrown significantly sort of off my feet to make sure I don’t aggravate something,” Luck told reporters Tuesday. “I keep my arm in shape certainly and there is a bunch to do.”

While there are likely some who are concerned with Luck missing the spring workouts, the Colts aren’t among them. This is especially true with head coach Frank Reich, who has expressed no worries about his quarterback missing OTAs and minicamp.

Even so, the calf injury does impact how Luck is preparing for the upcoming season. Specifically, he has to connect with his receivers more in the classroom than on the field.

“It certainly influences how I do certain things. I’m sure I would love to have a million reps with Devin Funchess by now, but I don’t so we have to talk,” Luck said. “So the priority at this point is health and making sure I am good to go for training camp. Anything beyond that I guess is a bonus if you will.”

The Colts are being extremely conservative with Luck in order to make sure he will be ready for the first day of training camp—which is expected to be somewhere at the end of July.

Until then, Luck will be keeping his arm in shape as the Colts round out the offseason workout program.
