The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to terms with former Chicago Bears tight end Trey Burton.
After being released by the Bears last week, it was expected that the Colts should show some interest in Burton given his history working with head coach Frank Reich during their mutual time with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Burton signed a four-year deal with the Bears during the 2018 offseason after working as a complementary piece with the Eagles behind Zach Ertz. However, that stint with the Bears was cut short after two seasons of injuries and inconsistent production.
While many viewed the signing as a strong one for the Bears, Burton wasn’t as productive as expected. Maybe it was due to the quarterback play or the offense he was in, but Burton had middling production in 2018 to the tune of 54 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns. His 2019 was riddled with injuries and the Bears decided to part ways last week.
Burton’s connection with Reich should ease the transition and quite possibly could have an impact on the draft, specifically what the Colts do at the tight end position.
