Colts’ 2023 training camp preview: Linebackers

The Indianapolis Colts are set to return for training camp at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield with their first practice being held July 26.

Before then, we’ll be previewing each position, giving our takes on the starters, position battles and projected depth chart entering camp under the new regime.

The linebacker position will be an interesting one to watch for the Colts considering the injury situation surrounding Shaquille Leonard. His status and progress will be vital in the room’s production after he missed all of the spring workouts due to additional back surgery.

You can follow along with our training camp previews as we post the links below:

The Colts watched Bobby Okereke sign a four-year deal with the New York Giants in free agency and brought back E.J. Speed on a two-year deal shortly afterward. There weren’t many changes to the room outside of those moves.

Battle for Final Spot

The depth chart is pretty set going into training camp. The biggest question mark will be Leonard’s health, and that will have a pretty big impact on the decisions going into the room.

However, there will be a battle for the final roster spot in the linebacker room if the Colts decide to keep six linebackers as they typically do. The presumed leader of that battle is Segun Olubi while a pair of undrafted free agent rookies in Liam Anderson and Donavan Mutin will compete as well.

Shaquille Leonard a massive question mark

Without a doubt, the biggest storyline in the linebacker room surrounds Leonard. He posted an update with his rehab progress running some drills, but it’s clear there is still a lot of work to be done before he’s ready. After undergoing surgery in the 2022 offseason, missing all but three games and then undergoing additional surgery in 2023, it has been a long process for The Maniac.

We will go ahead and assume Leonard will be healthy enough to make the 53-man roster until an update is provided that he’s not.
