Colts’ 2019 player review: RB Nyheim Hines

The Indianapolis Colts had a strong running back room in 2019 and while Nyheim Hines didn’t hold a massive role in the offense, he found ways to make an impact elsewhere.

2019 Stats

Games Played: 16
Snaps: 339 (31.5% – offense)/87 (20% – special teams)
Carries: 52
Rushing Yards: 199
Yards per carry: 3.8
Receptions: 44
Receiving Yards: 320
Touchdowns: 2

Season Review

Hines didn’t have much of a role in terms of rushes between the tackles. He’s continuing to be used as a third-down, change-of-pace back that works well in space. However, the Colts may have found a new role for him where he can make an impact every game.

Following the season-ending injury to Chester Rogers, someone had to take over the punt return duties. That fell on the shoulders of Hines, and he immediately made the Colts wonder why he hadn’t held the job in the first place.

In just four games as the punt returner, Hines took nine returns for 281 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 31.2 yards per return.

Offseason Outlook

Hines is going into his third season, and his roster spot is safe. He now has a new role in which he can thrive with the Colts while seeing his limited work as a pass-catcher on the offensive side of the ball.

Given the depth of the running back corps, it is likely that no major additions are made to the group.

Conclusion

Hines has always been an intriguing talent that may have been misused in 2019. That is until the Colts made him the punt returner. Now, he has a role both as a pass-catching running back and the team’s punt return specialist.
