Colts’ 2019 free agency primer

The legal tampering period is upon us, and the Indianapolis Colts can begin making contact with those that represent the free agents set to hit the market when the new league year begins Wednesday.

Here is everything you need to know about the Colts entering free agency:

Overview

The Colts are coming off a 10-6 season in which they reached the AFC divisional round. Despite the surprisingly successful season, general manager Chris Ballard and head coach Frank Reich have several needs they can still address with free agency before the 2019 NFL Draft where the real building happens.

The Colts have the most salary cap space in the NFL, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will splurge in free agency. Ballard likes to sign mid-tier free agents that provide depth and leadership while building through the draft.

Priority team needs

Nothing is official until March 13

There will be plenty of reports and announcements that players have signed deals with new teams, but nothing is official until the new league actually begins on March 13 at 4 p.m. ET. Until that time hits, it is best to take everything with a grain of salt.
