Colourful photos show iconic landmarks at day and night at the same time

A new book by photographer Stephen Wilkes shows famous sights around the world at day and night at the same time.

The photography book, Day to Night, which will be published by Taschen in July, presents iconic landmarks in a remarkable way by fusing art with science.

Not only does Wilkes shoot over 1,500 exposures from a fixed angle, he also distills this visual information afterward in his studio, painstakingly composing selected frames into a single image.

"It’s that street photographer thing, that instinct to capture a moment," he told Shutterbug. "My eye decides what the moment is. Light in my work is a narrative."

The photos include this shot of Trafalgar Square, below - if you look closely, you can see a couple embracing in the middle.

"First I create a background plate, then the best moments of time get layered seamlessly into that background," he explained of his method to the photography publication.
