Colour blind cricketer, 11, given special glasses to help him spot ball in grass

Trying to see the cricket ball during games used to leave colour blind schoolboy Charlie Jones in a terrible spin.

But he now has special glasses that have transformed what he can pick out.

Crucially, the specs mean the 11-year-old can finally distinguish between red and green.

Describing what it’s like without the glasses, he said: “The ball tends to merge into the grass.

“Sometimes you can see it, sometimes it’s harder...

“But now I can see so many colours – green, blue, purple, red, orange.

“The first thing I wanted to do is play cricket. I am super-happy with my new glasses and I’m ready to experience life now.”

His cricket coach Gareth Roberts said: “In his first game, he was bowled out second or third ball.

“He was quite upset and said he just couldn’t see the ball. I began to look into ways we could help.”

He then found out about the glasses, made by EnChroma.

Charlie, who plays for Brymbo Cricket Club, near Wrexham, is now raring to go. He said he hopes the glasses will help him on the field and in day-to-day life.

Dad Darren said: “He really struggled with cricket especially because of the reds and greens. Now there will be no stopping him.”

Describing the moment Charlie wore the glasses for the first time, mum Joanne said:

“In that split second everything changed for him for ever.”
