‘Colossally drunk’ man nearly took out woman’s eye with glass bottle in kebab shop assault

A man left a woman covered in blood after he swung a glass bottle at her face outside a takeaway in Bristol city centre.

Tre Fearon, 28, of Whitehall Road, Redfield, left a woman with an inch long wound and a permanent scar near her eye when he attacked her outside a kebab shop on Broad Quay when he was "colossally drunk."

Fearon, who admitted to one count of assault causing actual bodily harm and one count of assault by beating, was sentenced to 14 months in prison at Bristol Crown Court today (Thursday, November 25.)

The court heard how a woman was waiting outside a kebab shop with friends at around 7.30pm on Saturday, April 17, when she saw Fearon get into an argument.

Fearon left the kebab shop “worked up” with alcohol in his hand, and his friends tried to calm him down.

He then approached the woman waiting outside the takeaway and said “what are you looking at?”

Fearon swung a glass bottle of rum at the woman, which connected with the left side of her head and left her covered with blood.

The 28 year-old then tried to strike the woman’s partner, but only made contact with his arm.

Fearon fled the scene in the direction of Baldwin Street after attempting to disguise his appearance.

He was later arrested after the woman’s partner tracked him down and called the police.

Mandla Ndlovu, prosecuting, told the court how the woman suffered an inch-long wound and scar near her eye, and was treated for her injuries in hospital.

He said: “She felt run down, tired and in shock.

"The incident left her worried about her eyesight. She made an emergency appointment with the opticians.”

Mr Ndlovu quoted the woman, who said: “I felt low and anxious. My eye was swollen and bruised.”

Jayne Flint, mitigating, said: “Mr Fearon is extremely remorseful about what he did on that evening.

“He asked if the victim was going to be alright and wanted to apologise.

“It has been a wake up call for Mr Fearon.”

Miss Flint explained how Fearon was in a “very dark place” at the time of the assault, and had turned to drinking heavily.

“This was a completely random attack on the first person he saw,” she said.

“Since then he has sought to address his alcohol issues.

“He is in a different place today than he was in April.”

Judge William Hart called the incident a “wholly unprovoked assault."

He told Fearon: “You were in a dark place and turned to drink. It doesn't explain why you chose violence against a woman.

“The appropriate punishment can only be achieved by locking you up.”
