MINAMI-BOSO, Chiba -- Before summer officially arrives, artisans in this city on the tip of the Boso Peninsula are busy producing Boshu uchiwa fans.
This traditional local craft is known as one of the three major fans in Japan, along with Kyo uchiwa from Kyoto and Marugame uchiwa from Kagawa Prefecture. Boshu uchiwa is made from supple local bamboo and features a pattern that take advantage of the rounded bamboo frame.
Uyama Kobo workshop in the city is currently receiving few orders for fans targeting tourists due to the spread of new coronavirus, reducing its production volume to about half of an average year.
"I want to keep producing fans looking forward to the time after things settle down," said artisan Mayumi Uyama.
