Can anyone slow down the freshman receiver?
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Dante Wright continued to flash his impressive skills in all facets of the game. After going for 150 combined yards and two scores against Colorado, Wright followed up that performance with 179 combined yards and two scores against Western Illinois.
His week one performance led to being named to the week one Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll and he could possibly be named again for week two. Wright has given Mike Bobo another weapon in his offense that will cause matchup nightmares for defensive coordinators.
Discipline Will Cost The Rams Wins This Season
The Rams beat the Leathernecks by 25 points and it could’ve been a lot worse if it weren’t for turnovers and penalties. The Rams let their opponents continue drives and killed their own drives with unnecessary penalties. Two penalties on one play cost them field position and a potential touchdown.
The Rams need to hold onto the ball. They coughed up the ball four times, but luckily they only lost it twice. After both turnovers the Rams defense stepped up, only giving up three points off of turnovers. Better teams will take advantage of short fields and score more points.
Collin Hill & Marvin Kinsey Shine
Collin Hill is looking more and more like the star QB Rams fans knew he could be before he tore his ACL twice. After a healthy offseason, Hill followed up his strong performance against Colorado with another against WIU. He finished the game 24/31 for 364 yards and four touchdowns.
Marvin Kinsey had himself a day. He had 13 carries for 89 yards, to go along with two catches for 91 yards and two scores. Kinsey impressed in this game, but he has a tendency to Jekyll and Hyde his performances. The Rams need to see continued consistency out of him to be a great team.
The Rams Defense Had Itself A Game
Even though this performance came against an FCS school, the defense gained a lot of confidence from their performance. They held Western Illinois to 60 yards of offense in the first half and 215 for the game. Most of which game against the Rams backups on a late touchdown drive.
The defensive line also had a big performance. They combined for six of the Rams seven sacks, forced and recovered a fumble, and stuffed the Leathernecks run game. Ellison Hubbard was a standout in this game for the Rams. Hubbard’s performance led to his inclusion in Pro Football Focus’ defensive team of the week.
We’ll see if there is any carryover from this game as the Rams visit the Arkansas Razorbacks next week.
