Rams get paid to play at Blue Devils

Colorado State basketball added one arguably the most marquee team to its non-conference schedule next year: the Duke Blue Devils.

The Rams are heading North Carolina for a one-time buy game that will give Colorado State a shot against the Blue Devils, but also a decent paycheck for their troubles.

There is no word on a date, time, or television announcement. Duke being a huge brand this game will get attention but one thing to consider is that the ACC now has its own network in conjunction with ESPN. With the Rams not likely to be a top-end Mountain west team, this game could be put on the soon-to-be launched network.

The last time these two teams played was when Niko Medved was an assistant coach under Tim Miles back on Dec. 7, 2011 which saw the Rams lose on the road to Duke, 87-64.

This is the first publicly known non-conference game for Rams basketball.

Let’s be honest here, Duke is paying to bring in Colorado State for a victory. The likely result is the Rams going to Durham, North Carolina, and losing while taking home a check in the six-figure range.

This also will give Colorado State a chance to matchup with one of the best teams in the country and test themselves heading into Mountain West play.

This type of scheduling is a must for the Mountain West if they want to boost its NET rating with the chance to earn some quality Quadrant 1 wins, but also a loss won’t hurt Colorado State all that much assuming Duke is a Q1 team.

These type of games the result is not always the main objective, yes, winning is always the key but other things can be gained by playing a title contending team.
