Colorado ski resort to open Saturday, get jump on season

Keystone Resort in Colorado announced that it will open to skiers and snowboarders Saturday, likely becoming the first North American resort to open for 2019-20.

Keystone announced via Twitter that Saturday’s opening will be its earliest opening in more than 20 years.

Early snow storms and cold temperatures, allowing for extensive snow-making operations, have made the opening possible. (Other Colorado resorts also are working toward early openings.)

For the time being, operations at Keystone will be limited to lifts serviced by the River Run Gondola and Montezuma Express, the resort stated in a news release.

“Our mountain operations team put in a tremendous amount of hard work to get our new snowmaking system ready for Keystone’s early opening,” Jody Churich, Keystone’s new vice president and general manager, told The Denver Channel.

To celebrate opening day, Keystone will offer donut holes, hot chocolate, and coffee to skiers and riders at the base of the River Run Gondola.
