Colorado Issues an Ozone Action Day for the Denver Metro with Unhealthy Levels Possible for Sensitive Groups

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Regional Air Quality Council issued an Ozone Action Day Alert at 4 p.m. Sunday for the Front Range Urban Corridor, warning that ozone concentrations in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category were possible Sunday and Monday, mainly in and near the Denver metro area.

The alert covers the corridor from Douglas County north to Larimer and Weld counties, including the Denver-Boulder area, Fort Collins and Greeley. Affected counties are Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, western Arapahoe, western Adams, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer and Weld. It remains in effect until at least 4 p.m. Monday.

The highest ozone-related Air Quality Index reading recorded at 5 p.m. Sunday was 104, in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, measured at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory monitor. That category is a specific threshold rather than a general warning, and the distinction matters for who needs to change plans.


The Category Language and Who It Applies To

Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups is the AQI band running from 101 to 150. It signals that the general population is unlikely to be affected, while people in defined risk groups may experience symptoms.

The state health recommendations attached to Action Day alerts are specific: an increasing likelihood of respiratory symptoms in sensitive individuals, aggravation of heart or lung disease, and premature mortality in people with cardiopulmonary disease and older adults. People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.

Children are included for a physiological reason. Their lungs are still developing, they breathe more air relative to body weight than adults, and they spend more time in vigorous outdoor activity during summer. Adults who work or exercise outdoors also inhale more air per hour, raising their dose without any underlying condition.

An Action Day designation carries practical consequences beyond advice. During summer, open burning is prohibited when an Action Day for ozone or fine particulates is in effect, and the state asks residents to limit driving gasoline and diesel vehicles for the duration of the alert.


The Afternoon Chemistry Behind the Peak

Ground-level ozone is not emitted by anything. It forms in the air through a chemical reaction between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight.

Nitrogen oxides come largely from vehicle exhaust, power generation, and oil and gas operations. Volatile organic compounds come from those sources plus solvents, paints, fuel vapor and vegetation. Neither is ozone. Sunlight is the ingredient that combines them.

That reaction chemistry explains the daily pattern. Concentrations build through the morning as traffic emissions accumulate and sunlight intensifies, peak in the afternoon and early evening, and fall overnight when the reaction stops. It is the opposite of the pattern for wildfire smoke, which often settles into valleys overnight.

Geography compounds the problem. The corridor sits at the base of the mountains, where terrain and stagnant summer air trap pollutants and afternoon upslope winds carry emissions toward the foothills. Elevation also means stronger ultraviolet radiation, driving the reaction faster than at sea level.

Ozone is a gas, and it irritates the lining of the airways directly. State air quality guidance warns that exposure can cause acute respiratory problems and trigger asthma attacks, and that prolonged exposure can cause long-lasting damage to the lungs.


A Stretch of Consecutive Alerts

This alert is not isolated. The Front Range has been under Action Day alerts on consecutive days for more than a week, several of them for multiple pollutants combining ozone with wildfire smoke.

An alert issued Aug. 3 warned that increasing wildfire smoke would push fine particulate concentrations into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category throughout the northern Front Range while ozone could reach the same category the following afternoon. An alert issued Aug. 5 covered both pollutants, with the highest ozone concentrations expected in the southern and western portions of the Denver metro area. A further alert issued Aug. 8 again covered both, with the heaviest smoke expected in northern areas including Fort Collins and Greeley and the highest ozone in and near Denver.

The Sunday alert is ozone-specific. That difference is useful, because the two pollutants call for different timing. On an ozone day, the risky window is the afternoon. On a smoke day, the worst air is often early morning in valley locations.

For households with an asthmatic child or an adult with COPD or heart disease, a consecutive run of alerts matters more than any single day, because there has been no clean-air interval in which airways recover between exposures.


Practical Adjustments for the Rest of the Alert

The most effective step is timing. Moving running, cycling, yard work, and children's outdoor sports to early morning avoids the afternoon peak entirely, and morning exercise on an ozone day carries substantially less exposure than the same effort at 4 p.m.

People with asthma should keep quick-relief inhalers accessible and follow their existing asthma action plan. Anyone with heart or lung disease who develops chest tightness, unusual shortness of breath, wheezing or a cough that does not settle should contact their clinician rather than waiting for the alert to expire. Nobody should stop or change a prescribed medication because of an air quality alert.

Indoor air offers limited protection from ozone specifically, since the gas breaks down on indoor surfaces but also enters with outside air. Closing windows during the afternoon peak and running air conditioning on recirculate helps. Portable HEPA filters capture particles effectively but do not remove ozone, which is a gas rather than a particle, a distinction worth knowing on days when both pollutants are elevated.
