Colonial lands another top-name player as two-time champ Phil Mickelson enters mix

FORT WORTH, Texas _ Another day, another big-name golfer is headed to Fort Worth for next month's Charles Schwab Challenge.

Phil Mickelson is the latest commitment to the Colonial's field as he joined the list on Friday. Mickelson has won the tournament twice (2000 and 2008), but he has only played the event twice since his 2008 victory, in 2010 and 2017.

Mickelson was a late scratch from the field in 2009 when his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. He would have returned as defending champion that year. Tournament officials organized a "Pink Out" during the 2009 Colonial to honor Amy and raise awareness for the disease, a move Mickelson called "pretty cool" and "flattering."

Mickelson returned in 2010 but missed the cut after posting rounds of 71-73. He finished T29 in 2017.

Mickelson, a five-time major champion known as 'Lefty,' has made 12 of 15 cuts in his Colonial career. He is ranked as the No. 61 golfer in the world, but has become one of the most popular PGA Tour players over the years with 44 career victories.

Mickelson is a significant addition to the field that already features six of the top 10 players in the world, including top-ranked Rory McIlroy.

The Colonial will be the PGA Tour's first event back since suspending play amid the coronavirus pandemic. It is scheduled to be held the week of June 8 with tournament rounds June 11-14.

Before his appearance at the Colonial, Mickelson will play in 'The Match: Champions for Charity' alongside Tiger Woods and NFL stars Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. That event is scheduled for May 24 at the Medalist Golf Club in Florida.
